Can't Do New Stuff Using Old Ways
Maybe it is not unprecedented, maybe it is just the inevitability of change. So then what is your relationship to change?
Unprecedented: without previous instance; never before known or experienced; unexampled or unparalleled:
an unprecedented event.
Synonyms: novel, exceptional, extraordinary, unique
If everything happening currently in US society is being labeled as unprecedented then maybe we need a new definition of the word, OR use a new word to describe what is occurring.
Because the current state of the United States is not unprecedented, it’s what’s to be expected of a nation-state who built its whole foundations and identity on a story that is unraveling at the seams.
That story is one of freedom and democracy the “American” way. A way that requires using violence to maintain a rigid binary and hierarchy system based on racialized understandings of human difference.
So now is the time to reflect and ask if what has been really works for us as a collective now? And if not, what are we willing to do to change the trajectory of the story that is unfolding?
Time operates in a loop. It is a cycle. And cycles have patterns - ways of operating that have a rhythm to them which can be monitored, studied, analyzed, and then shifted/disrupted to create new timelines.
When we look at the time loop of Empires we see a clear pattern of them rising and falling, with the fall typically starting with in-fighting amongst those who have power while they allow the structures around them to crumble.
When the loop reaches this stage it is up to those within the confines of Empire to break the loop and open up new roads/new possibilities for living.
This to me is where we are as a society, so what does it mean to break the loop of the colonial project and reclaim our humanity back?
For me, we have to take our time back as a means to reclaiming our humanity. And that requires doing things differently than what we are use to IF we really want a different result(s).
I talk more about this in my latest episode of “Abolitionist Dreamscapes”. Have a listen and let me know what comes up!
